The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the most important festivals in China, with a history of more than 2,000 years. It all began as a way to remember the great poet (诗人) Qu Yuan. When his country was defeated (被打败), he jumped into the Miluo River in Hunan and ended his life. To protect his body from fish in the river, the local people threw zongzi into the river on that day. Then the tradition of making and eating zongzi passed down.

However, in the past, nearly every family knew how to make zongzi. Mothers and grandmothers usually taught their children to wrap the rice in leaves at home. Now, most people buy zongzi from shops. The shops sell many kinds of zongzi—some with meat, some with sweet beans. It's faster and easier this way.
People also celebrate with dragon boat races, realgar wine (雄黄酒), and mugwort leaves (艾草). Some customs are seen less now, especially in cities. But good changes come too—women now can join the boat races!
The festival changes a little, but keeps its big meaning. We remember Qu Yuan and have happy time together!
