Dear Alice,
Thank you for your last email. I enjoyed reading it very much. Thank you for telling me something about your best friend. Now I will tell you something about mine. Her name is Sandy. We have been friends since our primary school. Now we're in the same junior high school.
Sandy has long, dark brown hair and blue eyes. She is the same age as me, but a little taller. She is always happy and cheerful. She is also very polite to others and full of thoughts in her mind.
We sit together in class. We are deskmates and help each other with our schoolwork. We always go home together after school and play computer games for an hour. Sandy thinks fast and usually wins. Sandy is learning to play the piano. I'm learning to play the flute. Practice is very important when learning an instrument. Therefore, we practise together every day. We play simple duets (二重奏) with the piano and the flute.
We both enjoy our school life. We have five lessons a day. I especially like maths but Sandy's favourite subject is Chinese. Both of us like PE and music.
Sometimes Sandy stays overnight at my house, or I stay overnight at her house. We always have a good time together. Do you ever stay overnight at your best friend's house?
Write back to me soon.
Love,
Lily

What's your favourite school subject? Do you love maths? Does English interest you? Or are you more of a scientist? We all have favourite subjects, but what if you study two or more together instead of learning about each subject separately? That's exactly how some students in our school are learning.
When students learn about topics such as world events, they study several subjects together. For example, in a course about World War II, the students study history, geography and maths. Learning about topics, not just one subject, helps students see several points of view. In another course, called “Working in a cafe”, students study English language, communication skills and economics (经济学).
Some educators believe students can learn better when they work in groups to solve problems. Working together helps students develop their ability to communicate. At this point, students in our school don't spend whole school day working in groups. They still attend regular classes and study some subjects separately.
Our school is making this change, because teachers believe that working together to study topics is better and more challenging for students than working alone or studying only one subject at a time. Moreover, we believe that students who choose to study topics that they care about and to collaborate (合作) with teachers and other students in learning about them become better learners. It also feels that students who learn in this way are better prepared for jobs.
