A
Animals do many amazing things to get through the winter.
Some of them migrate. They travel to warmer places to find food. Many birds migrate in autumn. Some kinds of birds fly alone. But the trip can be dangerous. So more of them travel in large groups. For example, geese fly in V-shaped groups.
Some animals stay active in winter. They must prepare for the cold weather. Many change their bodies. For example, snowshoe rabbits grow white fur to help them hide in the snow. ______ Some animals, like mice, collect lots of food in autumn and store it to eat later.
Some animals hibernate during winter. This is a special and very deep sleep. Their bodies become cold and their heartbeat and breathing slow down. In autumn, these animals eat much more food than usual and store body fat. The fat can keep them alive while hibernating.
As for insects, they spend the winter in different forms. Some insects also spend the winter without moving like animals. Some insects spend the winter as pupae (蛹). Other insects die after laying eggs in autumn. The eggs change into baby insects in spring and everything begins all over again.
