In the Qing Dynasty, keju was held every three years and it was made up of four rounds. Students had to pass the first round in order to take part in the next one. Each round would take one to three days. As for the last round, the palace exam (殿试), students had to go to the capital city. Keju played a very important role in choosing talented people to work for the country. People who passed the palace exam were called jinshi. Usually, all the jinshi would be government officials.
