Yu Garden, also known as Yuyuan, has a long history. It is said to have been built in the Ming Dynasty, more than 400 years ago. It was owned by a government officer named Pan Yunduan then. It was built for Pan's parents as a place to enjoy a quiet and happy time in their old age. Yu in Chinese means pleasing and satisfying.
Yu Garden is in Huangpu District, Shanghai. It covers an area of about 20,000 square metres. It is made up of several areas： Sansui Hall, Dianchun Hall, Huijing Hall, and the Inner Garden. Although small in size, the garden has all necessary parts that a traditional Chinese garden should have—the pavilions(亭子), rockeries(假山), pools and cloisters(回廊).
Walking across the Jiu Qu Bridge is said to bring people good luck. Besides the huge items, much of the garden's beauty is in the tiny carvings and sculptures(雕刻与雕塑). You'll find clay sculptures and brick carvings and painting works of famous artists.
