Have you ever wanted to live in a world full of mythical creatures (异兽)? In the TV series Fangs of Fortune, these creatures come to life in an imaginary world.
Coming out on 26th October 2024, the series drew ideas from Classic of Mountains and Rivers, an old Chinese book about mythical creatures. Classic of Mountains and Rivers came out before the Qin Dynasty. It writes about the world in the eyes of people at that time. The 30,000-word book tells us about 40 states, 550 mountains and 300 waterways. It also talks of more than 100 people from history and 400 mythical monsters (怪物)!
Classic of Mountains and Rivers has given ideas to many works in the past and now. Stories in the book influenced the writing of Journey to the West and Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio. Pop culture also takes ideas from the book. British writer J. K. Rowling said that Chinese mythology helped her when she created one of the beasts in the film series Fantastic Beasts.
About 20 creatures from Classic of Mountains and Rivers show up in Fangs of Fortune. One of them is Baize. It knows everything about Chinese mythical creatures. It is said that Baize once met the Yellow Emperor, the first ancestor (祖先) of all Chinese people. Baize respected (尊重) the Yellow Emperor. It told the emperor all about the creatures: their names, what they looked like and what to do with them. Then, the Yellow Emperor asked people to make a picture book of the creatures and named the book Baize Tu.
