Have you ever had anything unforgettable between you and your neighbours? When I was at the age of ten, I heard that our neighbour, a retired doctor lost his wife because of a strange illness which many doctors didn’t meet. He had the finest garden I had ever seen. The garden was full of different kinds of flowers. People could see my neighbour’s beautiful flowers from the street. I used to think there wasn’t a flower in the world that he didn’t grow.
Our neighbour lived near us, but we knew him little. We just waved our hands and said hello to him as we walked past his house on the way to the city park. I was sure he was lonely because I saw his sad look on his face. So I decided to help him smile. After school, I would go to his house and chat with him while he was walking in his backyard. Through the way, he told me all about his flowers. I could know gardening was his joy. On rainy days, I was also invited to go into his house.
I sang and danced, and he would clap his hands and say “great”! For me, it was a perfect stage. Looking back as an adult, he might have been cheering the fact that this torture (折磨) was nearly ending.
I thought I could help him smile, but at the same time, he encouraged me a lot. Helping others is helping ourselves.
