The Healthy Food Pyramid is a simple guide to the types and proportion(比例) of foods that we should eat every day for good health. It contains the four main food groups, according to how much they contribute to a balanced diet based on the Australian Dietary Guidelines.
The bottom layers make up the largest part of the Pyramid because plant foods should make up the largest part of our diet—75% of what we eat! Plant foods contain a lot of nutrients(营养物) like vitamins and minerals(矿物质). Older children, teens and adults should aim to have at least 2 servings of fruit and 5 servings of vegetables each day.
The middle layer includes milk, yoghurt, cheese, meat, fish, eggs, nuts, and legumes(豆类). They primarily provide us with calcium and protein(钙和蛋白质), plus other vitamins and minerals. These foods are our main sources of protein. But each food also provides a unique mix of nutrients, including iron, zinc, Vitamin B12 and healthy fats. We should aim to have a variety of animal and plant - based choices from this food group.
The top layer refers to healthy fats. We need small amounts of healthy fats every day to support heart health and brain function.
Two more healthy suggestions. Water is the best drink and cooking your own meals at home and choosing minimally processed foods will help limit added salt and sugar.
