After years of experience, Brenda was faced with a challenge in Sunday School. However, she just didn’t know how to 21 it in a good way. She had never been asked to teach a child quite like Cindy.

Cindy, you see, was 22. She came from a broken family. And although she was really 23, she thought she was so bad that she could not be successful. In fact, Cindy needed care, and 24, Cindy needed love! There just had to be a way of 25 her. Day after day, Brenda would pray for Cindy, yet Sunday would come and go and she saw 26, if any, change.

Then, one day Brenda asked Cindy if she could 27 a role in a Christmas program the children were 28 to do, Cindy’s answer was, “ Don’t you think you can find someone better than me?”

“Better than you?” came Brenda’s 29. “What makes you think there is 30 better than you?”

“ Well, I’ve 31 been asked to do anything before because I’m no good, I won’t get the 32 right and then everyone will be mad at me for messing up(弄糟) their 33,” came Cindy’s answer.

“Oh, Cindy,” said Brenda in a/an 34 voice. “I am so 35 that you think that, but you are so wrong. Don’t you 36 how valuable you are?”

“No,” 37 a reply softly because Cindy was now in 38.

“But Cindy, in my eyes, you are special and you can also do something well like others,” Brenda said.

“Really? Do you really think so? Thank you, Miss Brenda! Nobody has believed in me like you. 39 I’ll have a try,” said Cindy as she 40 a hug(拥抱) from her teacher for the first time!

第二部分:阅读理解(第一节20小题,第二节5小题;每小题2分,满分50分)

第一节: 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。并在答题纸上将该选项标号涂黑。

A

There are two kinds of people in the world. Those of the first kind are born idlers (游手好闲者), taking interest in nothing. It seems what they live for is to pass time idly. They simply don’t know why they have to do so, nor will they bother to ask. The other kind are those who take things seriously and never wish to idle away their life. But only a part of the second group are eager enough to make success. All the others fail to make enough effort to make their dreams come true.

Why do things so happen to them? What are the reasons?

I later find out that some people are determined. They are “ igniters” that catch fire of their own, giving light and heat. But that’s not the case with others. They may be fuels but not igniters. As pieces of wood or coal, they need a match or a lighter to make them burn so that their energy can be released to give off light and heat.

The majority of people need some igniter to light them. Thus igniter becomes a must for those people to succeed. Unless a suitable igniter comes their way, they will always remain idle like cold unused firewood or coal.

Fortunately, such an igniter is not difficult to meet. One may find it in an instructive book, a film story, a few words of a close friend, some advice of a good teacher, a pleasant journey, or an unexpected love.

Any of these, coming at the right time, can serve as an igniter to start one’s enthusiasm(热情) for learning or for a better career, to turn him from a passive state of waiting to an active state of pursuing, to lend him strength to go ahead bravely. In that case, what he has prepared for years will be quickly turned into fruitful reality.

Such an igniter may turn up of itself, but most likely we have to find it ourselves. Never let a chance slide away, for it is the key to your success.

41. Who take things seriously but may not be able to succeed according to this passage?

     A. Idlers.                 B. Igniters.                 C. Fuels.                  D. Lighters.

42. What does the writer value most in order to succeed?

     A. Storing a lot of energy.                         B. Great interest in everything.

    C. An igniter coming at the right time.      D. Wonderful dreams about a bright future.

43. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this article?

     A. The writer describes two kinds of people.

     B. The writer encourages people to find chances to succeed.

     C. The writer praises those who work hard.

     D. The writer tries to make fun of idlers.

44. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “pursuing” in the sixth paragraph?

    A. Dreaming about success.                       B. Trying to achieve something.

  C. Preparing for the worst.                       D. Hoping to be a leader.

B

Ten Chinese PhD students are demanding that Beijing Normal University Professor Yu Dan be away from her television show on CCTV 10. They argue that her on-air explanations of Confucius’s Analects (孔子《论语》) are “incorrect and misleading”.

Yu is known for explaining Confucius’s Analects to a TV audience. But some complain that her explanations are unfaithful to Chinese tradition.

But Yu doesn’t seem to worry too much about her critics, saying, “It’s a matter of personal choice. Some like KFC, while others like McDonalds.”

Stealing an online gamer’s password might seem less harmful than credit(信用) card theft. It does keep the victim(受害者) from wearing himself out all night playing. But it is not all that nice, says 19-year-old Zhang Qiwen, in Shanghai.

Last August, Zhang accidentally downloaded a Trojan while playing Warcraft. The Trojan is a type of virus(病毒) used by hackers(黑客) to steal people’s passwords. Overnight the Trojan transferred all the “gold” (game credits) from Zhang’s private account(账户) to an unknown account. Zhang hopes the police will find and punish the thief, who can also pocket some cash since the stolen “gold” can go on sale online.

New England’s largest indoor public garden has opened here in a historic park, and officials expect it to become a center for learning about plants as well as a top attraction for visitors.

The glass-walled Roger Williams Park Botanical(植物学的) Center, which opened March 2, offers a tropical garden, an orchid garden, and a Mediterranean room with a collection of citrus trees. The center also has two classrooms and will offer gardening classes provided by the University of Rhode Island.

Roger Williams Park, named for the city’s 17th-century founder, also has a zoo. The park already attracts more than 2 million visitors a year, and Providence Mayor David Cicilline said that he expects the new center will attract more and more visitors to Providence.

45. Which of the following statements is true?

   A. Confucius’ Analects is like KFC or McDonalds in China now.

   B. 19-year-old Zhang was angry because the hacker stole his “gold”.

   C. The Trojan is a new online game.

D. The garden was opened only to attract more visitors.

46. We can learn from the passages that ________.

   A. there are four gardens in Roger Williams Park Botanical Center.

   B. No one likes Yu Dan’s explanations of Confucius’ Analects.

   C. Yu Dan won’t show up on CCTV any more for explanations of Confucius’s Analects

   D. now some people make money by stealing online gamers’ game credits and selling them

47. Where is Roger Williams Park?

   A. It’s in England.                            B. It’s in Providence

   C. It’s in a botanical center.              D. It’s in a famous zoo.

Don't go to Kauai. Go to any of the other Hawaiian Islands --- Maui, Lanai, the Big Island --- but leave Kauai for us. The weather on Kauai is so unpredictable(不可预测的) that sometimes it rains all day --- in fact, it's the second-wettest spot on the earth. Yes, there are giant double rainbows all the time, and the sunlight through the clouds is magical. But if you are not interested in these, go somewhere else. You just can't control the nature on Kauai, and who wants to surrender(屈服) to the nature when you could be at a fine hotel, lying in a comfortable chair next to a swimming pool, with food served upon request?

So what if Kauai produces surf champions the way Texas produces cowboys? Most of its 300 white-sand beaches are unmarked. Unless you connect with the local people, the hidden spots are hard to find. While Hanalei is the most beautiful town you've ever dreamed of, you can forget about discos and clubs. Worse, it doesn't have one single four-star restaurant. What it does have is the original drive through places where you pass by a rambutan tree(红毛丹树), and pick a piece of fruit.

Shopping in Kauai? Forget it --- unless you are interested in shell necklaces and beautifully carved wood bowls. Kauai is not about pampering(娇养). It's about going natural and finding the nature within you. It's a do-it-yourself place that offers walking along the coast, diving and swimming in the Pacific Ocean, and lying on the beach.

Don't go to Kauai unless you have a lot of time, because there's only one road, which can be slightly dull. It winds through the beautiful scenery of waterfalls, rivers flowing into the ocean, and taro (芋头) fields. You have no choice but to look at everything, because the speed limit is 35 m.p.h.

If you're not interested in color, don't bother with Kauai, because that's what you get --- red roads, blue oceans, and a hundred different shades of green. It's like diving on land. Many people on Kauai believe that this is Lemuria --- a lost island in the Atlantic. Can you imagine? Those Hawaiians, surfers, New Agers, and people who love nature and beauty and want a different quality of life --- what do they know, anyway? Forget about it --- you're not going to like it. Go somewhere else. Leave Kauai for us.

A. Kauai is an island near the Hawaiian Islands
B. Kauai is another name of the Hawaiian Islands
C. Kauai is one of the Hawaiian Islands

51. In the writer's real opinion, Kauai _____.
A. is not worth visiting at all                        B. is well worth visiting
C. is not a beautiful island                         D. is a dangerous island

52. Who would like to visit Kauai?
A. Those who love nature.                    B. Those who love city life.
C. Those who love the comfort in a fine hotel.    D. Those who love going shopping.

D

The 2006 World Water Week opened in Stockholm, Monday. The bad news is that a third of the world’s population, some two billion people, are already short of water. The water table is falling fast in heavily populated and poor areas of China, Mexico and India. If the present situation in water consumption(消耗) continues, these statistics(统计数字) will only worsen. But things do not have to be this way.

The main cause is agriculture. It takes roughly 3,000 litres of water to grow enough for one person for one day, or about a litre for each calorie. Demand for water will grow as the world’s population increases and as people eat more and more meat in particular. Raising livestock(家畜) requires more water, per calorie than growing crops. So the assessments(估计的数额) suggest that, by 2050, agriculture will consume twice as much water as it does now. Industry and domestic(家庭的) use, which now accounts for only a small part of water consumption, are also growing quickly. Global warming adds another layer of uncertainty and risk.

In theory, the world would still have more than enough water to feed everyone. But it might require much more food to be traded from wet parts of Europe, North American and Russia to hot and dry areas of Africa and Asia. Needless to say, poor farmers in those continents are in no position to pay for imports of food―and will become even poorer if their water runs short.

Traditionally, most countries tried to increase agricultural output through huge and expensive irrigation(灌溉) projects. But small investments(投资) in simple equipment, such as pumps to tap underground water, are faster to arrange, and return greater on capital(资本), and bring fewer environmental and social problems. And also, in Africa where agriculture relies mostly on rain for their crops, channels to gather and direct rainfall, and small reservoirs(蓄水池) or tanks to store it, would not only see them through dry seasons, but also allow them to gain bigger harvests out of the same fields. In that case, the global farming area would only have to rise 10% to meet rising demand for food―and there would be plenty of water to go round.

53.A possible title for the passage would be         .

      A. World Water Week: Bad News

       B. Water Shortage: Situation and Solution(解决)

       C. A Report on Water Shortage of the World

       D. The Problem of Future Water Consumption

54.The chief reason for the water shortage referred to in the passage is           .

       A. the rise of poor, developing countries   B. agriculture consumption

       C. global warming                        D. industry and domestic use

55.Which of the following is effective in solving water problem?

      A. To increase farming area as much as possible.

       B. To carry out big and expensive projects.

       C. To encourage small yet practical investments.

       D. To reduce water consumption in industry.

56.Which of the following best reflects(反映) the author’s attitude toward the water shortage problem?

       A. Concerned(关心) but hopeful.             B. Totally disinterested.

       C. Disappointed and upset.                      D. Highly optimistic(乐观).

E

Have you ever dreamed of visiting a planet in the Milky Way(银河系)? While the trip sounds exciting, it would take years and years to reach your destination. So in the future, bedtime for astronauts may be more than a few hours of regular shut eye. They would have to sleep for years.

European researchers are now conducting hibernation experiments. The study may help them understand whether humans could ever sleep through the years it would take for a spaceflight to distant planets. “If there was an effective technology, it could make deep space travel a reality,” said Mark Ayre of the European Space Agency last month.

What seems like a science fiction(小说) is not completely unlikely. Researchers have been able to use chemicals to put living cells into a sleep like state where they don’t age. They have now moved on to the small, non-hibernating mammals(哺乳动物) like rats.

A major challenge is the fact that cells can be very simple systems, whereas body organs are far more complex(复杂的). “It’s like moving from a simple Apple computer to a supercomputer,” said Marco Biggiogera, a hibernation researcher at Italy’s University of Pavia. Just like bears and frogs, the hibernation of human beings would cause a person’s metabolism(新陈代谢) to lower so they would need less energy.

Medical research, however, is just half of a spaceflight hibernation system. There is a challenge of designing a suitable protective shelter(栖身所). Such a shelter would provide the proper environment for hibernation, such as the proper temperature. It would also have to monitor(监控) life functions and serve the physiological(生理的) needs of the hibernator.

According to Ayre, the six-person Human Outer Planets Exploration Mission(使命) to Jupiter’s moon(木星的卫星) Callisto, could be an opportunity to use human hibernation. The mission aims to send six persons on a five-year flight to Callisto, where they will spend 30 days, in 2045.

57. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “hibernation” in the second paragraph?

  A. a long journey                      B. a living habit

58.According to the article, the hibernation research _______.

A. is just an idea                     B. is always a science fiction

C. has already finished successfully     D. has made some progress

59.In a hibernating state, a person needs ________.

A. less sleep       B. more food       C. less energy   D. more movement

60.What is the best title of the article?

A. Hibernation study for space travel B. Welcome to our space travel

C. To hibernate, to live longer         D. Welcome to the Milky Way

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- Chinese workers and army soldiers were racing to sweep snow-covered highways and unclog railway routes for millions of travelers trapped by cold weather. More than 67 million people have been affected by the weather and economic losses are expected to reach as much as $3 billion, Chinese officials say.
The snow storms have damaged power lines, houses and farmland, causing fears of food and energy shortages. Twenty-four people have died and some 827,000 people have been trapped in 14 different provinces, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said Monday.
In the past week, the snowstorms have hit the provinces in central, eastern and southern China.
"We've never seen such a cold weather lasting for such long a time," said Tang Shan, a man in his 70s in Changsha, the capital of Hunan province. "The last time we had one here was over 50 years ago, and not this bad."
The snow and ice have paralyzed(
使瘫痪) roads, railways and airports, leaving tens of millions of travelers on the way, officials say. Many of them are eager to go back home ahead of the traditional Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, which falls on February 7.
The Lunar New Year travel is China's busiest travel period of the year. But the cold weather is delaying travel plans. In the southern city of Guangzhou, as many as 500,000 train passengers had to stay in the station. About 100,000 passengers packed the square in front of the train station while others found shelter in schools and other public buildings while waiting for their trains.
Chinese premier Wen Jiabao has ordered urgent measures to unclog the transport jam and ensure a steady supply of food and energy.
"Let us unite as one to fight against the disaster," he said in an emergency meeting. "Let's ensure that the people enjoy Spring Festival."
But more miserable weather is expected. On Monday China's Weather Station issued a rare "red alert," warning of more severe snowstorms in the coming days. If so, the number of stranded travelers will surely swell.
41. What is the passage mainly about?

 e. The snow and ice have paralyzed roads, railways and airports.
  A. a, b, c                    B. b, c, d          C. c, d, e           D. a, b, e
43. What does the underlined word unclog mean?

Do you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and self- respect? The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized as "honor" help you create this life of good feelings.

Here's an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.

Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk's mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky excitement. Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul.

Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness?

In the first case, where we don't tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect. We would also demonstrate that we cannot lie trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the error to the clerk's attention causes different things to happen. Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable. Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased.  Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility.

There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions. Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it's easy to think and act honorably again when we're happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it's started, it's easy to continue. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.

45. According to the passage, the positive action in the example contributes to our ______.

A. self-respect                               B. financial rewards

C. advertising ability                    D. friendly relationship

46. The author thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is equal to ______.

A. lying           B. stealing         C. cheating        D. advertising

47. How will we feel if we let the clerk know her mistake?

A. We'll be very excited.                      B. We'll feel unfortunate.

C. We'll have a sense of honor.      D. We'll feel sorry for the clerk.

48. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage.

A. How to Live Truthfully            B. Importance of Peacefulness

C. Ways of Gaining Self-respect    D. Happiness through Honorable Actions

Everyone’s at it, even my neighbors. I thought I might be the only person left in the world who hadn’t done an eBay deal. So, I decided to try my hand at online auction(网上拍卖).

Buying for Beginners

Sign up on www. eBay. co. uk. Most items (e.g. tables, computers and books) ready for auction will come with a picture and a short description; others may be marked with “Buy It Now ” and have a fixed price. You can buy these right away.

If the item is being auctioned, you offer the highest price you are prepared to pay and eBay bids (出价) for you. The bid will be increased little by little until it goes beyond your highest bid, then you are emailed and asked if you would like to bid again. Auctions last up to 10 days and when they finish, you get an email telling you whether you have won the item.

How to Pay

Sellers decide how they would like to be paid and you need to check this before placing a bid as you might not want to post a check or postal orders. The easiest way is through PayPal, an online payment system that takes the money away from your credit card .

Selling Made Simple

If you plan to sell on eBay, it helps to include a picture of the item. I followed my friends’ advice and put up the items I wanted to sell for a 10-day auction, starting on a Thursday. This way buyers had two weekends to bid.

The big Things in Life

It’s easy to post a small item, but furniture is a big part of eBay and this has to be collectively sent by deliverymen. Check the ways of delivery before you bid.

49. What is the subject mainly about in this passage?

A. How to make payment online.                B. Ways of making delivery online.

C. How to use an online-auction system.   D. Advantages of an online auction system.

50. After bidding for an item, a buyer ______.

A. has chances to make higher bids                    B. will get what he wants in ten days

C. should make payment immediately         D. may check its picture and description

51. The easiest way of making payment mentioned in the passage is ______.

A. through a local banking system               B. by sending the money to the seller

C. through an online payment system          D. by paying the deliveryman directly

52. If you buy a writing desk on www.eBay.co.uk, the most important thing you should do is __________.

A mysterious “black cloud” approaches(靠近) the earth ? our planet’s weather is severely affected.
Throughout the rest of June and July temperatures rose gradually all over the Earth. In the British Isles the temperature climbed through the eighties, into the nineties, and moved towards the hundred mark. People complained, but there was no serious disaster.
The death number in the U. S. remained quite small, thanks largely to the air-conditioning units that had been fitted during previous years and months. Temperatures rose so high that people could hardly bear and they were forced to remain indoors for weeks on end. Occasionally air-conditioning units failed and it was then that deaths occurred.
Conditions were completely desperate throughout the tropics (
热带地区) as may be judged from the fact that 7943 species of plants and animals became dying out. The survival of Man himself was only possible because of the caves and cellars (地窖) he was able to dig. Nothing could be done to reduce the hot air temperature. More than seven hundred million persons are known to have lost their lives.
Eventually the temperature of the surface waters of the sea rose, not so fast as the air temperature, but fast enough to produce a dangerous increase of humidity (
湿度). It was indeed this increase that produced the disastrous conditions just mentioned. Millions of people in Cairo(开罗) and the Cape of Good Hope(好望角) suffered from a choking atmosphere that grew damper and hotter from day to day. All human movement stopped. There was nothing to be done but to lie breathing quickly as a dog does in hot weather.
By the fourth week of July conditions in the tropics lay balanced between life and total death. Then quite suddenly rain clouds appeared over the whole globe. The temperature decreased a little, due no doubt to the clouds reflecting more of the Sun’s radiation back into space, But conditions could not be said to have improved. Warm rain fell everywhere, even as far north as Iceland. The insect population increased in large number, since the burning hot atmosphere was as favorable to them as it was unfavorable to Man.
53. In the British Isles the temperature ______.
 A. rose to eighty
 B. stayed between eighty and ninety
 C. approached one hundred
 D. was above one hundred.
54. Millions of people in Cairo  and the Cape of Good Hope suffered from a choking atmosphere because ______.
 A. people couldn’t find the caves to escape from the heat
 B. the humidity of the hot atmosphere increased

C. air-conditioning units didn’t work there
 D. the water temperature rose as high as the air temperature.

55. What can be learned from the last paragraph of the passage?

 A. People in tropics survived all because of rain clouds.
 B. At the end of July the temperature continued to climb.
 C. the insect population would get smaller soon.
 D. whether the conditions could be improved still remained unknown
56. What is the best title of this passage?
 A. Effect of Black Clouds on Weather
 B. Increase of Temperature on the Earth
 C. Terrible Conditions in Tropics
 D. Survival of Man and Insects

Some people bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have fully realized on your own. My mom was one of those people.

My father died when I was nine months old, making my mom a single mother at the age of eighteen. While I was growing up, we lived a very hard life. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life, “Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it.

At fourteen, I was hit by a car and doctors said I would never walk again. Every day, my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to badly enough. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I returned to school―walking on my own! When the Great Depression(大萧条) hit, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support the both of us. At that moment, I was determined never to be poor again.

Over the years, I experienced various levels of business success. But the real turning point occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for families and was angry with they charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family. I told my wife that I was going to open a motel(汽车旅馆) for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at that time.

Not surprisingly, mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style. As in any business, we experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mother’s words deeply rooted in my soul, I never doubted we would succeed. Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world―Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1,759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $1 billion a year.

You may not have started out life in the best situations. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.

57. What Kemmons’ mom often told him during his childhood was ______.

A. interesting      B. moving                  C. encouraging             D. caring

58. What caused Kemmons to start a motel by himself?

A. His terrible experience in the hotel.

B. His sense of business success.

C. His mom’s support.

D. His wife’s suggestion.

59. Which of the following best describes Kemmons’ mother?

A. Modest, helpful and hard-working.

B. Loving, strong-willed and supportive.

C. Careful, helpful and strong-willed.

D. Strict, brave and supportive.

60. Which of the following led to Kemmons’ success according to the passage?

A. Self-confidence, hard work, higher education and a poor family.

B. Mom’s encouragement, clear goals, self-confidence and hard work.

C. Clear goals, mom’s encouragement, a poor family and higher education.

D. Mom’s encouragement, a poor family, higher education and opportunities.

I consider myself something of an expert on apologies. A quick temper(脾气) has   21   me with plenty of opportunities to make them. In one of my earliest   22  , my mother is telling me, “Don’t watch the   23   when you say ‘I’m sorry’. Hold your head up and look the person in the   24  , so he’ll know you   25   it, and he’ll be glad to accept your apology.”

My mother thus made the key point of a(n)   26   apology: it must be direct. You must never 27   to be doing something else. You do not   28   a pile of letters while apologizing to a person   29   in position after blaming him or her for a mistake that turned out to be your  30  . You do not apologize to a hostess, whose guest of honor you treat   31 _, by sending flowers the next day without mentioning your bad   32  .

One of the important things you should do for an effective  33   is that we should be ready to   34   the responsibility(责任) for our careless mistakes. We are used to making excuses, which leaves no   35   for the other person to   36   us. Since most people are open-hearted, the no-excuse apology leaves both sides feeling   37   about themselves. After all, that is the   38   of every apology. It   39   little whether the apologizer is wholly or only partly at fault: answering for one’s   40   encourages others to take their share of the blame.

As our van(有篷货车)pulled up to the farm to start a three-month program for troubled boys, we passed a cowboy on his horse. Bill was the owner of the farm, and he sat at the gate to wave us in. We made eye contact(接触) through the dusty window and he gave us a warm welcome.

All summer long Bill and his farm-hands taught us to ride horses, cut grass, cut up wood, and round up cattle. He understood the value of working with your hands, and we respected him for his knowledge and gentle leadership. He knew how important it was for boys like me to know that someone believed in them. He trusted us to do the job and do it right and we didn’t want to let him down. Several times that summer he took me fishing and we not only talked about how to cast a line, but also about my dreams and what I wanted from life. He encouraged me to make goals and shared stories from his own expenses.

The last day at the farm, Bill pulled me aside and praised me for the work I had done that summer―not only on the farm, but also on myself. He told me if I ever needed anything I could count on him. Four years later, I took him up on that offer. I called him up and asked for a job, I told him how his confidence in me had given me the courage to change my life. I explained that I wanted to help others in the same way. He offered me a job on the spot. I’m proud to say that each summer I’m the one who opens the gate for a van full of young men who need someone to believe in them, so they can learn to believe in themselves.

41. According to the author, what is important for the troubled boys?

A.     To have a job.

B.      To have enough money.

C.     To know that someone believes in him.

D.     To know that someone takes care of them.

42. Why did the author go to the farm the first time?

A.     He went there to find a part-time job.

B.      He went there to visit the owner of the farm.

C.     He went there to receive education as a troubled boy.

D.     He led some troubled boys there to complete the 3-month program.

43. What does the underlined sentence mean?

A.     He refused bill’s offer.

B.      He accepted Bill’s offer.

C.     He was interested in Bill’s offer.

D.     He felt satisfied with Bill’s offer.

44. From the last paragraph, we can infer that the author ________.

A.     was given a job later

B.      became the owner of the farm

D.     became the gatekeeper of the farm

The girls in this sixth grade class in East Palo Alto, California, all have the same access to computers as boys. But researchers say, by the time they get to high school, they are victims (受害者) of what the researchers call a major new gender (性别) gap in technology. Janice Weinman of the American Association of University Women(AAUW) says, "Girls are less comfortable than boys with the computer. They use it more for word processing rather than for problem solving, rather than to discover new ways in which to understand information.
After re-examining a thousand studies, the AAUW researchers found that girls make up only a small percentage of students in computer science classes. And they use computers less often than boys outside the classroom.
An instructor of a computer lab says he's already noticed some difference. Charles Cheadle of Cesar Chavez School says, "Boys are not so afraid they might do something that will harm the computer, while girls are afraid they might break it somehow."
Six years ago, the software company Purple Moon noticed that girls' computer usage was falling behind boys. Karen Gould with the company says, "The number one reason girls told us they don't like computer games is not that they're too violent, or too competitive. Girls just said they're unbelievably boring." What girls want, Purple Moon found, is characters they can relate to and story lines relative to what's going on in their own lives. "What we found from girls is the reason why they wouldn't want to play on a computer; it was just a content thing," says Karen Gould.
  The sponsor(
主办者) of the study says it all boils down to this: the technology gender gap that separates the girls from the boys must be closed if women are to compete effectively with men in the 21st century.

A "blogger" is a person who writes on an Internet computer website called a "blog". The word "blog" is a short way of saying Web log, or personal website. Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they like.
There are millions of blogs on the Internet today. They
offer news, information and ideas to many people who read them. They contain links to other websites. And they provide a place for people to write their ideas and react to the ideas of others.
A research company called Perseus has studied more than 3,000 Web logs. It says that blogs are most popular with teenage girls. They use them to let their friends know what is happening in their lives. The study also says that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking part in the activity after a year.
However, some people develop serious blogs to present political and other ideas. For example, the Republican and Democratic parties in the southern state of Kentucky, US, recently started their own blogs. And American companies are beginning to use blogs to advertise their products.
At the same time, some long-standing blogs have ended. Last week, blogging leader Dave Winer closed his free blog service, weblogs.com. He says the site became too costly to continue. He started the blog four years ago, and thousands of people had written on it. They are now upset because they did not know that the site was closing.
One blog that is still going strong is called Rebecca's Pocket. Rebecca Blood created the website in 1999. She wrote about the history of blogs on the site. That article led to a book called "The Weblog Handbook". It has been translated into four languages so far.
Ms Blood says Rebecca's Pocket gets about 30,000 visitors a month. She writes about anything and everything
politics, culture and movies. She recently provided medical advice. And she wrote about how to prevent people from stealing money from on-line bank accounts.

52. The best reason why Rebecca's Pocket is still going strong is that ______ .

For years, prices have risen in China for many reasons. However, inflation (通货膨胀) has not badly affected people's lives because living standards have improved. Inflation is not an unbeatable beast. In fact, economists from all over the world have found ways to stop or reduce it. There are now several methods of controlling inflation.
Reduce the amount of money being issued

Many experts believe inflation happens because too much money is printed. The more money the central bank issues, the more inflation there is. Therefore, the most important thing to do for any government is to control the amount of money being issued.
Cut down on government spending and increase government income

Over
-spending and over-expanding of governments can make inflation worse. Therefore it is helpful to reduce the size of big government bodies, cut down on their spending and pay fewer and smaller subsidies (津贴) to prevent inflation from speeding up.
Slow down the increase of salaries

It seems that giving bigger salaries to workers helps them manage when prices of their shopping are going up. In fact, as salaries increase, the central bank will have to issue more money to pay for the increase. Thus, increasing salaries may not be so good as it sounds. It's like cheating. Salaries should only be increased if workers produce more.
Increase bank interests

Interest increases can make more people put more money into banks. At the same time, enterprises take out fewer loans. Demand for money on the whole is lower.
Keep prices under strict control

Prices can be lowered by setting a ceiling
--the highest prices--for most goods and freezing prices on most goods.
57. The word "issue" in Paragraph 2 means ____.
  A. use            B. print          C. quarrel        D. invent
58. The writer uses "medicine" in title to stand for ____.
  A. ways to reduce inflation            B. reasons for inflation
  C. something to treat patients          D. prices without control
59. What is probably the best way to reduce inflation?
  A. No money will be issued.           B. Salaries will be reduced.
  C. More products will be produced.    D. Prices will be controlled.
60. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a way of reducing inflation?
  A. controlling prices

B. adjusting bank interests
C. improving people's living standards
D. controlling the amount of money being issued

A ticket for the Titanic's ill-fated voyage that belonged to the last survivor with memories of the disaster was sold to a collector from the United States at a British auction (拍卖) Saturday.

Lillian Asplund, who died in 2006 at the age of 99, was 5 years old when the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank during its maiden voyage from England to New York in 1912. Her father and three siblings (同胞) were among the 1,500 people who died.

She was the last American survivor of the disaster and the last with memories of it. There are at least two alive survivors who had been too young at the time of the sinking to recall their experience.

Asplund's ticket was sold for $65,772, auctioneer(拍卖商)Andrew Aldridge said.

Another key item sold from Asplund's collection was her father's pocket watch, which reportedly stopped at the exact moment the ship sank.

Aldridge said the hands of the watch were stopped at 2:19 a.m., when Asplund's father Carl fell into the North Atlantic and seconds before the Titanic disappeared beneath the waves.

The watch was bought by a Swedish collector for $61,786, Aldridge said.

He said most of Asplund's collection of 364 items ― which included rare photographs of the Titanic and post cards printed to mark the voyage ― had been sold at Saturday's auction.

The lots(拍卖品)were previously kept at Asplund's home in Massachusetts and had never been seen before in public, he said.

Asplund's parents, Carl and Selma, and their five children were traveling on the Titanic as they headed from their home in Sweden to the U.S. to make a new life in Worcester, Massachusetts, Aldridge said.

Lillian, her youngest sibling, Felix, and their mother, Selma, all survived the sinking.

56. We can learn from the passage that ___________.

A. the ticket and the watch were sold for $61,786.

B. Asplund’s parents wished to make a new life in America.

C. Lillian was the only child in the family.

D. Lillian was then too young to remember the experience.

B. Lillian Asplund was the last survivor of the disaster.

   C. All of Asplund’s collection had been sold.

D. The Titanic sank beneath the waves before 2:19 am.

58. What happened to Asplund’s collection before the auction?

A. An American collector bought the Titanic ticket.

B. They were exhibited in the museum.

C. They were kept secretly at Asplund’s home.

D. Nobody wanted to buy all the collection.

59. The passage is mainly about ___________.

A. the Titanic belongings of the last US survivor were sold.

B. Asplund’s ticket was sold for $65,772.

C. Lillian survived the sinking with her mother and her little brother.

D. Lillian had some rare photographs of the Titanic and some post cards.

B

In our life, we have rarely expressed our gratitude to the one who lived those years with us. In fact, we don't have to wait for anniversaries(周年纪念日)to thank the ones closest to us and the ones so easily overlooked. If I have learned anything about giving thanks, it is this: give it now! While your feeling of appreciation is alive and sincere, act on it. Saying thanks is such an easy way to add to the world's happiness.

Saying thanks not only brightens someone else's world, it brightens yours. If you're feeling left out, unloved or unappreciated, try reaching out to others. It may be just the medicine you need. Of course, there are times when you can't express gratitude immediately. In that case, don't let embarrassment sink you into silence and speak up the first time you have the chance.

Once a young minister, Mark Brian, was sent to a remote parish(教区)of Kwakiutl Indians in British Columbia. The Indians, he had been told, did not have a word for thank you. But Brian soon found that these people had unusual generosity. Instead of saying thanks, it is their custom to return every favor with a favor of their own, and every kindness with an equal or superior kindness. They do their thanks. I wonder if we had no words in our vocabulary for thank you, would we do a better job of communicating our gratitude? Would we be more responsive, more sensitive, more caring?

Thankfulness sets in motion a chain reaction that transforms people all around us ?including ourselves. For no one ever misunderstands the melody(旋律)of a grateful heart. Its message is universal; its poems transcend(超越)all earthly barriers; its music touches the heaven.

60. Who do we easily forget to express our thanks to according to the writer?

   A. Friends not meeting for a long time.    B. Former teachers and friends.

   C. People we want to get close to.        D. Our family members and good friends.

61. When we say something for what others do for us, it ___________.

   A. benefits to people who do something for us

   B. is good for both us and people who help us

   C. waste our and our friends’ time at the same time

   D. does harm to both us and people who help us

62. What does the writer mean in the third paragraph?

   A. The only way to thank others is to express by your own words.

   B. The best way to thank others is to do something for them.

   C. We can thank people who help us in various ways.

   D. We can thank people who help us in two ways.

63. The way to make us feel happy is ___________ when we think we ourselves are forgotten in the world.

   A. to help and appreciate others           B. to ask others to help us

   C. to remind others of our helping them     D. to ask someone to help others

Failure is part of the human condition. Most parents work hard at either preventing failure or protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed. One way is to lower levels. A mother describes her child's quickly making table as "Perfect"!  Even though it shakes on unbalanced legs. Another way is to shift (转嫁) blame. If John fails science, his teacher is unfair or stupid. The trouble of doing such things is that children are not well-prepared for life in the real world. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time, and that it's possible to enjoy a game even when you don't win. The young should be allowed to experience disappointment and be helped to master it.

Failure is never pleasurable. It hurts adults and children. But it can make a positive contribution to your life once you learn to use it. Ask yourself what you did wrong, how you can improve. Success, which encourages repetition of old behavior, is not nearly as good a teacher as failure. You can learn from a disastrous(失败的)party how to give a good one, from an ill-chosen first house what to look for in a second. Even a failure that seems definitive can produce fresh thinking, a change of direction. After 12 years of studying ballet (芭蕾舞) a friend of mine was turned down. "Would further training help?" she asked. The ballet master shook his head. "You haven't the body for it."

In such cases, the way to use failure is to learn the lesson quickly, asking “What have I left? What else can I do?" My friend put away her toe shoes and moved into dance treatment, a field where she is both competent (能力强) and useful. Failure frees one to take risks because there's less to lose.

68. The writer shows a(n) ___________ attitude to the behaviors of most parents.

   A. positive                    B. neutral                 C. negative           D. passive

69. In the second paragraph, the writer describes the contribution of failure from ___________ aspect(s ).

   A. one                     B. two                  C. three            D. more than three

70. According to the passage, we can learn something useful based on ___________.

   A. what we love                            B. what we can do

C. what we experienced                         D. what we have achieved

71. The best title of the passage is “___________”.

   A. The More Failure, the Better                B. Learning from Failure

C. Failure Is an Experience of Life             D. Failure Is Our Mother

“We got the letter from the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) this week saying Liu’s result (in March) has been approved and she is the first Chinese rider to qualify for the Olympics,” the country’s equestrian chief Cheng Qing said.

Liu’s qualification has made the host’s dream of providing an athlete for every sport at the Games come true.

As the host country of the Olympics, China was given six equestrian berths (名额)―four in jumping and one in both dressage and eventing. Riders only needed to meet the minimum qualification standards to participate in the Game.

The 29-year-old rider from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is certainly the best dressage rider in the country, having won several national titles.

Supported by the local sports bureau (体育局), since 2006 she has been training in Germany, one of the sport’s powerhouses (体育强国). And it is estimated(估计)a rider needs to spend around 2.5million to compete in the Olympics.

“She has made great progress there thanks to world-class training facilities(设施) and training methods,” Cheng said. “Her results were much better than the Olympic qualification standards.”

Liu will continue her preparations in Germany before the games to further enhance her skills. Five Chinese riders and their horses have been registered with FEL, the sport’s governing body, in order to make their way to Hong Kong, where the equestrian events are to be held.
