The Power of Listening
Last summer, I attended a team - building workshop at my company. One of the activities focused on improving interpersonal communication (人际沟通). We were paired (使成对) up and asked to share a personal story while the other person listened without interrupting (打断). I was paired with Sarah, a colleague I barely knew.
As Sarah began sharing her experience of moving to a new city, I noticed how nervous she seemed. I made an effort to maintain eye contact, nod, and occasionally smile to show I was engaged (专心的). When she finished, she thanked me for listening so attentively. She said it was the first time she felt truly heard in a long time.
Later, it was my turn to share. I talked about a recent challenge at work. Sarah listened intently, asking thoughtful questions that helped me reflect on the situation. By the end of the activity, I felt a deeper connection with her.
This experience taught me the importance of active listening
in building trust and understanding. It's not just about hearing words but about being present and empathetic (有同感的). Since then, I've tried to practise this skill in both my personal and professional life, and it has significantly (显著地) improved my relationships.
