C
When Maya McDougall's parents look at her, they see a baby with sparkling almond eyes taking her first awkward steps across the living room. Her mother, Meki Cox McDougall, is Black and Chinese. And her father, Chris McDougall, is Irish and Italian. They know that their multi-race daughter may look quite different from others. They wonder whether Maya will ever be fully accepted in a nation obsessed with skin color. “I don't think I see color when I look at her,” Meki Cox McDougall said. “But I often look at what other people might think.”
The results of Census 2000 had focused the US's attention on its most difficult questions: what is race, and how does it define people?
For the first time, the census allowed people to describe themselves by checking more than one race. It offered 126 categories and combinations. Among them was the one that fits 10-month-old Maya: white, Black, American Indian and Asian.
Racial discrimination is being criticized in America. People think that it is important to end discrimination and have equal opportunity.
Faced with the questionnaire of Census 2000, Meki Cox McDougall wanted to simply declare that she and her daughter are multiracial. But that was not an option. The federal government added the option of choosing more than one race on the census form. But it rejected another proposal, a new “multi-race” category.
That left Meki Cox McDougall and others wondering whether the federal government ought to drop race from the census altogether. The official determination to group people in categories, they argue, may widen racial divisions in the US.
Chris McDougall said he believes that labeling people by skin color has always been wrong. “I don't like the fact that we are trying to identify people by race,” he said. But he understands why people cling to racial identity. He understands the feeling of unity, which gives people the sense of safety.
