A gecko is a tiny lizard that appears ¹to have the remarkable ability to walk up almost any surface. For years scientists wondered how it could do this. Then they discovered the answer: each gecko's foot is covered with millions of tiny hairs. When these hairs come into contact with a surface, they create intermolecular (分子间的) forces which allow the gecko to stick to almost anything. Once scientists understood this principle, they wanted ²to see if they could make a tape which could mimic its capability and be used over and over again. They soon succeeded, but then were ³annoyed to discover that their gecko tape had a big defect: the surface it was used on had to be completely dry. ⁴Making the tape work on wet surface became their next big challenge. Then researchers hit upon another idea. Mussels are a shellfish that can ⁵produce proteins which allow them to stick to things underwater. Since these proteins can be made in a lab, what if the gecko tape ⁶was coated with it? The result was geckel - a tape which can be used as many as a thousand times, and which sticks just as well to both wet and dry surfaces.
