Pan Zhanle: China’s Golden Swimmer
Pan Zhanle is a great swimmer from China. He started learning to swim at four years old. The water felt cold and scary(可怕的) at first, and he often drank pool water. But he always tried hard and never gave up. His parents cheered every small step, like swimming five meters alone.
At twelve, Pan joined a provincial swimming team. Every day, he woke up at 5 a.m. and practiced for six hours, swimming over 10,000 meters. His arms ached, and his eyes turned red from pool water. Many times he felt tired, but he always told himself, “Keep going!” In 2018, he faced a big problem: his body grew slower than others. He lost races and felt hopeless. But he worked even harder, eating special meals and sleeping early. After a year, his height increased by 8 cm, and he became much stronger.
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, millions watched on TV. Pan did something amazing: he won gold in the men’s 100 m freestyle and broke the world record in 46.40 seconds! When he saw his name top the board, he cried with joy. He also helped his team win another gold in the relay race(接力赛). People shouted “Flying Fish!”—a name for his speed.
