Gourds(葫芦)have a history of more than 7,000 years in China. People often use these special - shaped plants to cook delicious dishes. But today we are talking about the pyrography craft(烙画工艺)on gourds.
The craft could date back to the Han Dynasty, and it entered its golden age during the Qing Dynasty. Many cities of China like Tianjin and Beijing have such craft. ▲ As the fourth - generation inheritor(继承人)in his family of Beijing's gourd - pyrography craft, Niu Chengguo has been working hard on the craft over the past 40 years. With his great love for beautiful things, Niu has kept improving his skills and created a lot of pieces of gourd works.
“When I was a little boy, I liked seeing my grandpa make lively patterns on gourds. I began studying how to create the artworks under my grandpa when I was 11,” says Niu.
In 2009, Niu set up a gourd - craft group in his village, Dingjiazhuang in Shunyi District, Beijing. During the past decade, he has spared no effort in developing the group to help the villagers become rich by growing, processing and selling gourd crafts. So far his gourd works have become popular both at home and abroad. They have sold well in many countries and parts of Southeast Asia, Europe and America. Many pieces of works have been on show during cultural exchanges held by Beijing's government. As a result, the gourd - pyrography craft gets more popular.
In 2014, Niu started Beijing Gourd Art Manor to provide a platform(平台)to help visitors understand the beauty of the gourd crafts. “I just want to pass on the traditional skills,” Niu says.
