All through the long summer vacation, I just sat alone on the side of the street at our block(街区) in silence and watched the other boys play baseball. I was never asked to take part though, for they believed I would be no good at it.
The baseball time ended and the boys sat around, mostly talking about the games played during the day or to be played tomorrow. Then long silence would fall and they would run away quickly. It was right after one of those long silences that something changed. I can no longer remember which boy it was who broke the silence with a question; but whoever he was, I nodded to him thankfully. “What’s in those books you’re always reading?” he asked. “Stories,” I answered. “What kind?” asked somebody else without much interest.
Instead of answering his question, I told them for two hours the story I was reading at the moment. The book was _Sister Carrie_. The boys listened in wonderment. I must have told it well, but I think there was another reason that made them so interested as real audience. Listening to a story being told in the dark is one of the most ancient forms of having fun, but I was offering them a new and exciting experience as well.
For the nights thereafter, I would take my place on time and begin my evening stories. Sometimes, to taste my victory better, I even made up some untrue parts. I would stop at the most exciting part of a story and continue the next day. I enjoyed the long summer evenings until school began in the autumn.
I keep wondering what drove me to act as I did, but for that evening at the block, I found a true love of mine that would last forever.
