Ⅰ. 阅读还原(话题:如何用英语礼貌地表达)
How can we use vocabulary and grammar in English to show politeness and kindness when we speak?
Use modals (情态动词)
Modals are those words you learned in English classes such as would, could, might and may. They soften (使温和) your requests or commands (命令). If you use modals the next time you send a request by email, ask for something on the phone, or when you need something from a friend, you’ll sound more polite! For example:
I need to use your pen for a moment. →
Use vague (模糊的) language
Vague language means not too specific (明确的) or too direct. We often use expressions such as a bit, around, kind of, a few, quite, slightly, and a little. For example:
That’s not quite what I had in mind. What if we made a few changes?
Change your grammar
Here’s how you can do this. Change the present tense (时态) to the past tense or a progressive tense. Your meaning is still in the present, but you change the verb to add softness and to be less direct. We often do this with verbs such as hope, feel, think, want, and wonder. For example:
Do you have time to meet tomorrow? → Could you have time to meet tomorrow?
A.Here are some great ideas for you.
B.These expressions can give less direct information.
C.Sometimes we change the grammar tense to be more polite.
D.Using a modal can change a direct question into a polite request.
E. May I use your pen for a moment?
