Ⅴ. 阅读短文,完成练习。
It was a terrible but meaningful day for Jack and Sarah. The two were on holiday in a mountain. They were taking a walk in the early afternoon when suddenly the ground started to shake (抖动). In just two minutes, nothing was the same! They were in the middle of an earthquake (地震).
Jack and Sarah tried to find some other people first. One by one, they found 21 other people. Many were visitors, young and old. Soon it was dark and it started to rain heavily. Some cried and some lost hope.
At that time, Jack and Sarah decided to do something. Sarah said, “The roads are too dangerous. We can’t go down the mountain until tomorrow. We must stay here tonight.” Then Jack and a few young men went back to look for food. They found some, but not enough for everyone. The young people gave theirs to the older ones.
After that, Jack and Sarah divided (分开) the people into five groups. They also tried to bring all the mobile phones and made sure each group had one. They used them as flashlights (手电筒). The light on the dark rainy night made everyone feel safe.
Early in the next morning, the groups started to go down the mountain. It was difficult, but the group members helped and cared for each other. After eleven hours’ walking, they got out in the end. Everyone was tired but they felt lucky because they were part of a special team. This special team gave them hope for life.
