In 1974, Chinese farmers got an amazing find in Shaanxi province. They found a lot of clay soldiers. These clay soldiers are 2,200 years old. But their life-like looks make people surprised. They are called terracotta soldiers(兵马俑).
Then in 2007, workers in Shandong province got another find. Once again, it was an army of terracotta soldiers. But this time they were smaller in size.
In 246 BC, the building of the terracotta army began. It was under the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. Shi Huang is remembered by Chinese people for many things. He unified China, although it broke apart not long after his death. He started to build the Great Wall. It took nearly 40 years and more than 700,000 workers to build his terracotta army. And there were not only soldiers in the army, but also horses!
The Qin Dynasty was followed by the Han Dynasty. The emperors also asked workers to build armies of terracotta soldiers. But the size of the clay model was much smaller and only 12 inches tall.
