"Well, as I told you, Mr Sherlock Holmes," said Mr Wilson, "I have a small shop at Saxe-Coburg Square. It's not very large and in recent years it hasn't been very successful. In the past, I had two assistants. Now I have one, and he would like to work for half of the wages in order to learn the business."
"What's the name of the young man?" asked Sherlock Holmes.
"His name is Vincent Spaulding, and he's not so young. It's hard to tell his age. I could not have a smarter assistant, Mr Holmes. I know very well that he could get a better job and make twice what I give him. But he is happy."
"The first thing that disturbed us was that advertisement. Spaulding came into the office eight weeks ago, with the paper in his hand, and he said he wished to be a red-headed man, because there was another vacancy at the League of Red-Headed Men. He could get much money if he could get it."
"Have you ever heard of the League of Red-Headed Men?" asked Sherlock Holmes. "You are suitable for one of the vacancies."
"Tell me all about it," said Mr Wilson.
Sherlock Holmes said, "Oh, each vacancy gets the pay of two hundred pounds a year. But there is little work to do. From the advertisement, you can see for yourself that the league has a vacancy. An American millionaire named Ezekiah Hopkins set up the league. Ezekiah Hopkins was very strange in his ways. He was red-headed and he liked all red-headed men. So when he died, he wanted to give all his money to men with red hair. It's good pay and there is very little to do."
"But there are millions of red-headed men," said Mr Wilson.
"You see it is only for Londoners and grown men. This American came from London, and he wanted to do something good for the old town. Your hair is perfect," Sherlock Holmes said.
