Most people use their mouths to talk, but do you know some people use their hands to speak? American Sign Language, often called ASL, is used by most people with hearing problems in America and Canada. ASL has about 4,000 different signs. Like spoken languages, sign languages cannot be translated word for word(逐字地).
Sign languages have several main visual(视觉的) parts that work together to express(表达) meaning. The first part is the shape made by the hands. Signers would not spell out all the words that they are signing. But signers may use the alphabet(字母表) to spell these. Each letter has a hand shape. Sign languages also have other visual clues(线索), such as the expressions(表情) on a person's face.
