How many fathers usually go to the parent-teacher meetings of your class? Did you ever think about a “dads only” parent-teacher meeting?
On Aug. 24, a school in Hangzhou, Zhejiang held a special meeting. The school only asked dads to come. The school wanted to “let dads actively take part in family education(教育)”, reported Guangming Daily.
Now, the worry about the absence(缺席) of fathers in family education is growing.
According to a 2020 report by the All-China Women's Federation and the National Bureau of Statistics, most mums in China help their kids with homework—about 68 out of 100 mums do this.
However, both dads and mums are important in their children's education.
“Dads can shape young kids' personalities (个性),” said Luo Xuepeng, a father from Guangdong with a 9-year-old son. “A wise and strong dad can help children have good habits and become friendlier.”
Why do dads miss school meetings?
• I'm really busy with work and can't take time off. ①
• I'm not good at talking with teachers and I might miss something important. ②
• Traditionally(传统上), dads just make money, and mums do with the family things. Going to school meetings feels like more of a mum's job. ③
• Honestly, sometimes I just like to relax and be a lazy dad. ④
Experts say dads can do more to help their kids.
How long do Chinese dads spend with their kids?
• 2.9 hours on weekdays
• 7.7 hours on weekends
When dads spend more time with their kids, the kids can:
• do better in language and Maths
• do better when facing problems
• feel more confident
• make more friends
