Frances Wood comes from London, the UK. She loves words, books and languages. She used to work in the British Library to restore(修复) important old Chinese books.
Frances says, “For a very long time, for 30 years or so, I was head of the Chinese collections in the British Library. ” She spent her working life with Chinese books. In her free time, she wrote books about China and introduced Chinese culture to people in the UK and other countries in Europe.
Frances comes from a family of linguists(语言学家). Her mother taught French. Her father spoke French well and taught in France for some time, and he was in charge of(负责) French in the British Museum Library. The family went to France every year. Frances then learned both French and Spanish. They are easy to learn for an English speaker.
But when it comes to a lifelong career(职业), Frances says she didn’t want to do French or Spanish. She thought she’d like to learn a language which is different and as difficult as possible. She looked at Chinese, Japanese and Arabic and chose Chinese. Frances learns something new every day—a new character(字), a new phrase, etc. “I’m very glad that I chose Chinese. Chinese is the most beautiful language,” Frances says and smiles.
Learning Chinese has been enjoyable for Frances. From the moment she began, she has loved it. She will keep learning, studying and loving it for the rest of her life.
