Do you know that paper was first invented in China? Before paper was invented, people used to write on bones, turtle shells and bamboo pieces. But it was hard to write on them and even harder to carry them.
Papermaking is one of the greatest inventions by Chinese. 105 AD is often considered as the year in which papermaking was invented. The raw material for the first paper came from silk rags (破布). It took several steps to make a piece of paper. First, the rags were put in water, then boiled, and next hit hard many times to form a pulp (浆状物). A thin bamboo screen was then dipped (蘸) into the pulp and became covered with a thin film of fiber (一层纤维). The screen fit inside a mold (模具), which was used to press out the useless water. Finally, the screen was left to dry on a heated wall. After it was dry, a piece of paper could be peeled off the screen.
In fact, the papermaking technique was improved by Cai Lun, an official at the court of the Han Dynasty. Cai Lun Paper was much lighter and cheaper than the materials used before.
