### B
The vaquita(小头鼠海豚) is one of the smallest members of the dolphin and whale family. A vaquita is about 1.5 meters long with two black patches around their eyes. They only live in the northern part of the Gulf of California in Mexico. They can live for at least 21 years. Scientists believe that females probably give birth to a little vaquita between February and April every other year.
The vaquita is one of the most endangered animals in the world. They were first found by humans in 1958. However, they are in danger of disappearing now. The World Wildlife Fund says that about 10 vaquitas are left in the world. Last September, scientists found two baby vaquitas in the wild. The discovery was a sign of hope. But scientists worry that more vaquitas die each year than are born. The vaquita population was around 600 in 1997, but it reduced 90 percent between 2011 and 2016.
The vaquita’s biggest danger comes from humans. They are often caught in the fishing nets that are designed to catch fish such as totoaba(石首鱼). Many of them get hurt and even die. In 2017, the Mexican government stopped the use of such nets in the area to help save the vaquita. In January 2022, the government started a programme to protect the animal’s living areas. Local fishermen must pass a government inspection(检查) when fishing. The environmental group Sea Shepherd also joins in to help. Though much has been done to save the vaquita, there is still a long way to go.
