一、完形填空(共15小题,每小题1分,满分15分)
阅读下面的短文,从每小题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出可填入空白处的最佳选项。
Kids love to play. They know that a ball is a good thing to play with. The scientists from a university in London discover that bumblebees also seem to know the same thing.
When animal scientists talk about "play", they are describing an animal doing something repeatedly not for survival. They are not doing the action to get food or shelter or other rewards. Play usually happens when a creature is relaxed. According to reports before, "play" is best known in mammals (哺乳动物) and birds. Bumblebees are the first insects known to play.
After an earlier experiment, the scientists trained bumblebees to roll balls into a goal for food. However, some bumblebees were rolling balls even when they weren't rewarded. This made the scientists wonder if the bumblebees were playing. To test the idea, a new experiment was carried out.
The scientists set a pathway from the bumblebees' nest to a feeding area. They placed small balls on both sides of the pathway. On one side, the balls were attached and couldn't move. On the other side, the balls could roll around. The bumblebees didn't have to leave the pathway to find food, but they left anyway. They weren't so interested in the side where the balls didn't move, but they made lots of visits to the side with the rolling balls. After catching the balls with their legs, the bumblebees would flap their wings to roll the small balls. As a result, the scientists found that the younger bumblebees spent more time rolling balls because they are more energetic.
The scientists are still not clear why the bumblebees enjoy rolling the balls. However, the research is an important part of further exploring how the insects' minds work and whether they have feelings.
