C
Long before our sun and earth were here, a Jupiter - sized planet was born around a sun - like star. The story of this planet’s discovery began in 1988. Since then, astronomers(天文学家) have found thousands of such planets, and they think there are many more yet to be discovered.
Astronomers have discovered many of them with a special space telescope(望远镜). Many of these planets go around one star. A few of these planets even go around two stars. However, some of these planets are alone by themselves and do not go around a star. Astronomers cannot see these planets with their eyes, so they use some special ways to find out where the planets are and what they are like.
Although these planets are far away from us, we know some things about them. We know they come in all kinds of colours and sizes. Some of them are made of the same kinds of things as those on the earth. Many planets are made of stones(石头). Some of them are like planets in our own solar system like Mars.
Astronomers want to find a planet like earth by planet - searching. It may also support life on it.
