The stars were always within reach for Katherine Johnson.
Katherine was born in West Virginia, on August 26,1918. Maths was easy to her when she was a little girl. She started high school when she was just 10 years old and became a college student when she was 14. At 18, Katherine taught students maths in Marion, Virginia. And then, in 1938, she became a student and studied maths at West Virginia University. But she left early and returned to teaching.
In 1952, she learnt about jobs for women with maths and computer skills in a team. She worked for the team with another woman to solve some difficult problems for sending people into space. One of her biggest achievements(成就) was helping with the country’s first human spaceflight(载人航天飞行) in 1961, and letting astronaut Alan B. Shepard, Jr. have a safe trip. Katherine died on February 24, 2020, at the age of 101.
Katherine said,“I love my job, and I love the stars. This job is a great pleasure for me.”
