Autumn is the season for pumpkins. A pumpkin can be as small as your fist (拳头) or even bigger than your head. In the United States, pumpkins are part of American culture (文化) in several ways.

For example, the jack - o’ - lantern is a common (常见的) decoration (装饰) during Halloween. Many people like to make them and put them in front of their houses. People first hollow out (挖空) their pumpkin. Next, they carve (雕刻) a face or other things on one side. Then, they place a candle inside to make the pumpkin glow (发光). The lanterns can look funny or scary.
During the Thanksgiving holiday, a pumpkin pie is a common dessert. It is made from pumpkins. It also has some delicious spices (香料) to give it a nice flavour (味道). People often put some whipped cream (搅打奶油) on top of it. It is one of my favourite food to eat during Thanksgiving.
Finally, there are also pumpkin growing contests (竞赛). For these contests, farmers try to grow the biggest pumpkins they can. The person who has the biggest pumpkin will win the first prize.
