Rats (鼠) have lived on the earth longer than man. And wherever man has gone, except for the very coldest parts of the world, rats have also gone and have very quickly grown in numbers.

History books tell us that the armies of rats moved into Europe from Asia hundreds of years ago. On their way, these armies of rats swam rivers, raced across open fields, destroyed crops, and moved through buildings, scaring and frightening people.

It didn’t take rats long to discover that there was a better way of traveling than on foot. They found ships just to their liking. These unlisted passengers had no trouble adjusting to sea life on any kind of ship.

In no time, they were exploring below decks and making holes in sacks (麻袋) and boxes filled with good things to eat. Then as now they were no fiends of sailors. Along the wharves (码头) of the seaports all over the world you can hear tales about rats. Some of these stories, such as those about rats being the first to leave the sinking ship, are probably true. This is because more rats live below decks in the very bottom of a ship. So they are the first to get wet if the ship develops a leak (漏洞). No wonder they run!

Though people have lived with rats all through history, they have said very little good about rats. Rats eat crops, damage property and even cause deaths by carrying disease from one place to another.

Yet, it is no easy job destroying rats. Rats defend their homes with great courage. Even a cat will think twice about fighting a large rat. And they are smart enough to live under all sorts of conditions. Now there are more rats living on the earth than there are people. It is thought that there are more than five billion rats alive today.

(  )59.The writer tells the reader in the first paragraph that                          .

       B. living in the bottom of the ship, rats are the first to feel water coming into the ship.

       C. rats are very sensitive (敏感) to what is happening around them.

D. rats can predict dangers.

Science has told us too much about the moon that it is fairly easy to imagine what it would be like to get there. It is certainly not a friendly place. Since there is no air or water, there can be no life of any kind. There is not much variety of scenery either. For mile after mile there are only flat plains of dust with mountains around them. Above, the sun and stars shine in the black sky. If you step out of the mountain shadow, it means moving from the severe cold into intense (强烈的) heat. These extreme temperatures continually break rocks away from the surface of the mountains. The moon is also a very silent world, for sound waves can only travel through air. But beyond the broken horizon, you see a friendly sight. Our earth is shining more brightly than the stars. From this distance, it looks like an immense (巨大的) blue, green and brown ball.

In one way of thinking, failure is part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The “spider-story” is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the thirteenth century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider (蜘蛛) making a web. The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times. On the seventh time he made it and went on to make his web. Bruce is said to have been encouraged by this and to have gone on to defeat the English. Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one. Once he was asked why he kept on trying to make a new type of battery (电池) when he had failed so often, he replied, “Failure? I have no failure. Now I know 50,000 ways it won’t work.”

So what? First, always think about your failure. What can you change so that things will go right next time?

Second, is the goal you’re trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think about this question, “If I do succeed in this, where will it get me?” This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn’t be doing anyway.

The third thing to keep in mind about failure is that it’s a part of life. Learn to “live with yourself” even though you may have failed.

(  )67.This passage deals with                          .

       A. failure and success                                 B. two sides of failure

C. the “spider-story”                             D. the invention of light bulb

(  )68.In the first paragraph the writer tells mainly about                              .

       A. the value of failure     B. how people fail    C. famous failures     D. how not to fail

(  )69.The thing the writer does not tell you to do as to dealing with failure is                 .

A. check out your goals to see if they are right for you

B. think about failure as part of your life

C. think about failure and find out what went wrong

D. keep away from things that are beyond you

(  )70.Even if we have failed, we should                             .

       A. Learn to forget it                              B. learn to remember it

C. learn to enjoy it                                D. learn to accept it

第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分.满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A,B,C,D四个选项中.选出最佳选项填入答题卡。

A

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experiences? Strangely enough, the answer to both these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.

It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degrees of intelligence will be completely different.

56. Which of the following sentences best describes the writer's point on Paragraph 1?

  A. To some extent, intelligence is given at birth.

  B. Intelligence is developed by the environment.

  C. Some people are born clever and others born stupid.

  D. Intelligence is fixed at birth, but is developed by the environment.

57. It is suggested in Paragraph 2 that _______.

  A. unrelated people are not likely to have different intelligence

  B. close relation usually have similar intelligence

  C. the closer the blood relationship between people, the more different they are likely to be in intelligence

  D. people who live in close contact with each other are not likely to have similar degrees of intelligence

58. Whether a person can reach his intelligence depends on ________.

  A. his reading   B. his surroundings   C. his parents    D. his health

59. The best title for this article would be ________.

  A. On Intelligence

  B. What Does Intelligence Mean

  C. We Are Born with Intelligence

  D. Environments Play a Part in Developing Intelligence

B

The idea of fighting a noise by making more noise sounds strange, .but that's exactly what motor engineers are doing in Germany and some other countries Carmakers' research and development laboratories have already proved that mixing in more noise with the help of loudspeakers can reduce the unwanted noise.

Physicists have known about the technique for a long time. Sound is made up of pressure waves in the air. If two sound waves of the same frequency mix so that the highest point of one wave happens at the same time with the lowest point of the other wave, the result is no sound. Therefore, by producing a perfect copy of the noise and delaying it by half a wave cycle, we can kill the unwanted noise. Using this technique many carmakers are racing to develop noise-killing systems both inside and outside the cars.

Another good thing about the use of noise-killing systems is that it saves the need for a silencer, which not only reduces the weight of a car, but also makes the motor burn less oil and work better.

Some engineers believe that the carmakers haven't decided if they will put it into production because it would add several hundred dollars to the cost of their cars.

60. Which of the following gives a general idea of how the noise-killing system works?

A. By producing pressure waves going in the opposite direction.

B. By mixing high frequency sound waves with low frequency sound waves.

Flight attendants(航班服务员) are part of those working on airplane passenger flights. They serve as a connection between the airline and its passengers. They satisfy the personal needs and comforts of the passengers while carrying out normal duties. They try to make the passengers' trip so enjoyable that they will want to fly with the airline again. Attendants receive training that helps them work calmly in an emergency and ensure the safety of the passengers.

The first flight attendants on U.S. airlines were men. But from the 1930's until the 1970's, the airlines hired only women as attendants. Though men have now returned to the position, the majority of flight attendants are women.

Long-distance flights have as many as 14 attendants on the largest jets and 6 on other planes. Most short-run jet flights have at least 3 attendants.

Flight attendants check on flight conditions, food, and emergency equipment. They give safety instructions to the passengers, make flight announcements before and after take-off, and try to make the passengers as comfortable as possible.

Erik Weihenmayer wants to climb Mount Everest. He loves to climb, and there is no place greater for climbers than the peak of 29,035 feet, the world's highest mountain.

Weihenmayer is blind. He has been blind since age 13, when an eye disease robbed him of his sight. His new book, Touch the Top of the World. A Blind Man's Journey to Climb Farther than the Eye Can See, describes his blindness and climbing. He is the first blind man to attempt Everest. The team reached the base camp at 17,800 feet last Wednesday and began its climb Saturday. If all goes well, Weihenmayer will reach the top on about May 15.

"I'm not just some broken blind guy," Weihenmayer, aged 32, said for hours before he left Los Angeles on Friday for Katmandu, Nepal. "I put my life in my fellow climbers' hands, and they put their lives in my hands. It's an honor to reach that state."

"I want to experience the sense of adventure. Blindness has nothing to do with that. But a message of the climb is that a blind person can join a team and climb the highest mountain in the world."

Weihenmayer has climbed the highest peaks on four continents. North America's Mount McKinley, South America's Aconcagua, Africa's Kilimanjaro and Antarctica's Vinson Massif. He is an expert rock and ice climber, having scaled EL Captain in Yosemite National Park. When he was 16, he attended a school that taught blind people to be independent. One day, a group went rock-climbing. "I really liked it," Weihenmayer said, "You can solve problems. It is sense in your inner mind. People didn't think blind people could go out and became expert rock climbers."
