After
my husband died suddenly from a heart attack, my world crashed around me. My
six children were all under 10, and I was burdened with the responsibilities of
earning a living, and caring for the children. I was fortunate to find a
wonderful housekeeper to care for the children during the week, but from Friday
nights to Monday mornings, the children and I were alone.
One Friday evening I came home from work to find a big pretty German Shepherd(牧羊犬)on our doorstep. This dog seemed to intend to enter the house. The children liked “German” immediately and begged me to let him in. I agreed to let him sleep in the basement. That night I slept peacefully for the first time in many weeks.
The following morning we made phone calls and checked lost-and-found ads for German’s owner, but with no results.
On Sunday I had planned to take the children on a picnic. Since I thought it best to leave German behind in case his owner came by, we drove off without him. When we stopped to get gas, we were amazed to see German racing to the gas station after us. No way was he going to be left behind.
Monday morning I let him out for a run. He didn’t come back and we were all disappointed. We were convinced that we would never see him again. We were wrong. The next Friday evening, German was back on our doorstep. Again he stayed until Monday morning, when our housekeeper arrived.
This pattern repeated itself every weekend for almost 10 months. We grew more and more fond of German. We took comfort in his strong, warm presence, and we felt safe with him near us. As German became part of the family, he considered it his duty to check every bedroom to be sure each child was cozy in bed.
Each
week, between German’s visits, I grew a little stronger, a little braver and
more able to handle; every weekend we were no longer alone and enjoyed his
company. Then one Monday morning we patted him on the head and let him out for
what turned out to be the last time. We never saw German again.

In addition to
Koreans, some Asian husbands and wives do not share the same family names. This
practice often puzzles English-speaking teachers when talking with a pupil’s
parents. They become puzzled about the student's correct last name. Placing the

In recent years many countries of the world have been faced with the
problem of how to make their workers more productive. Some experts claim the answer
is to make jobs more varied. But do more varied jobs lead to greater
productivity? There is evidence to suggest that while variety certainly makes
the workers' life more enjoyable, it does not actually make him work harder.
As far as increasing productivity is concerned, the variety is not
an important factor. ?
Other experts feel that giving the worker freedom to do his job in
his own way is important and there is no doubt that this is true. The problem
is that this kind of freedom cannot easily be given in the modern factory with
its complicated machinery which must be used in a fixed way. Thus while freedom
of choice may be important, there is usually very little that can be done to
create it. Another important consideration is how much each worker contributes
to the product he is making. In most factories the worker sees only one small
part of the product. Some car factories are now experimenting with having many
small production lines rather than large ones, so that each worker contributes
more to the production of the cars on his line. It would seem that not only is
the degree of workers' contribution an important factor, therefore, but it is
also one we can do something about.?
To what extent does more money lead to greater productivity? The workers themselves certainly think this is important. But perhaps they want more money only because the work they do is so boring. Money just lets them enjoy their spare time more. A similar argument may explain demands for shorter working hours. Perhaps if we succeed in making their jobs more interesting, they will neither want more money, nor will shorter working hours be so important to them. ?
53.Which of these possible factors leading to greater productivity is not true?
A. To make jobs more varied.?
B. To give the worker freedom to do his job in his own way.?
C. Degree of work contribution.?
D. Demands for longer working hours. ?
54. Why do workers want more money? ?________
A. Because their jobs are too boring.? B. In order to enjoy more spare time.?
C. To make their jobs more interesting.? D. To demand shorter working hours. ?
55. The last sentence in this passage means that if we succeed in making workers' jobs more interesting, ______.?
A. they will want more money?
B. they will demand shorter working hours?
C. more money and shorter working hours are important factors?
D. more money and shorter working hours will not be so important to them ?
56. In this passage, the author tells us _______.?
A. how to make the workers more productive?
B. possible factors leading to greater efficiency?
C. to a certain extent more money lead to greater productivity?
D. how to make workers' jobs more interesting ?

For all the dinner table, a glass of milk seems to be a constant , at least it was when I was growing up.It was widely believed that milk was integral in building strong bones and teeth. There’s no doubt that dairy products(乳制品), and milk in particular, are high in protein and calcium, and most milk products are supplemented with Vitamin D and A.
While it’s well known that our bones need calcium, some studies suggest that high calcium intake doesn’t necessarily lower a person’s risk for fractures(骨折).A Harvard study found that people who drank two or more glasses of milk had no greater protection from breaking a bone than those who drank a glass or less a week.
There’s no doubt that we need calcium. Some anti-dairy supporters claim that dairy can lead to heart disease. Much of this claim is based on high fat and high dairy products, like cheeses and creams, which may indeed contribute to cardiovascular problems. Some studies have linked high milk intakes with a risk of prostate cancer; this seems to be caused by high-fat dairy products, not dairy in general.
Although milk was always regarded as one of the most important thing we need for our bones, yet least promoted, factors involved in strengthening bones. Perhaps we should think of dairy as less like a nutrient and more like a food. If you like it, eat it.If not, find some others.Because some claims may not be completely true, when I eat a cream, I’m not thinking about calcium, protein, or any such thing. I’m thinking delicious.
57.Which of the following is TRUE on the milk?
A.The more milk you drink, the more risk for fractures you might be.
B.The more milk you drink, the less risk for fractures you might be.
C.The less milk you drink, the less risk for fractures you might be.
D.There is no link between them.
58.Some anti-dairy supporters claim that dairy can lead to except______.
A.cardiovascular problems B.heart disease
C.prostate cancer D.stomach cancer
59.What’s the author’s attitude towards milk?
A.He doesn’t like milk any more
B.He used to drink milk as a child.
C.He regards milk as a nutrient.
D.He always cares about calcium, protein when he eats something.
