A
Microplastics(微塑料) have entered seemingly every part of the planet today, including rain over the Rocky Mountains. Recently German scientists have even found them in Arctic(北极的) snow. Microplastics are pieces of plastic smaller than 5 milli-meters(毫米). Sadly, the scientists found 1,800 pieces of microplastics per liter of snow.
Scientists have been puzzling over how this flood of pollution makes its way to the Arctic. A new study from Germany’s Alfred Wegener Institute finds that the mi-croplastics in the snow come from the air. They are moved by the wind, just like dust, and then mix with ice in the air and fall in the Arctic as snow.
Finding these plastics in Arctic snow means that we may breathe them in. Are they bad for us? We do know that our bodies cannot take in “large” pieces of micro-plastics. However, if the plastics are small enough, they can find ways into our bodies and stay there for a long time, which can be bad for our health. What’s more, earlier studies have shown that microplastics may contribute to(造成) lung cancer risk.
Microplastics have also been found in rivers and oceans around the world. The research has found that they flow over long distances and into our oceans, doing harm to ecosystems(生态系统) along the way. They start in our wastewater, when we wash clothes with plastic fibers(纤维). The wastewater then flows into rivers and out to the sea, where microplastics are eaten by sea animals. If people then eat these ani-mals, it means that we’re eating microplastics as well.
