A
I first learned about the word on a blog called “Create Eat Happy”. That blog explains “DanShaRi”, one of the keywords in recent years in Japan as follows:
Dan—to cut out unnecessary stuff, like shopping bags, coupons…
Sha—to throw away junk, such as clothes, books, toys…
Ri—to step away from your obsessions (执念), like birthday gifts…
The idea is, if you throw away unnecessary things around you, you’ll get more room, time and energy around you that leads you to an affluent life.
As soon as I read this I knew it had to be my word this year. Why “DanShaRi”? Well, when I first came to Japan I had a couple of suitcases and a few boxes, but I was also pretty bad at the “Ri” part and left boxes and boxes of memories and obsessions in my house. Also books, CDs, DVDs… Because of a whole room full of old and useless things, house cleaning has always been a nightmare for me. Gradually, I didn’t feel like going home and tried to step away from it as well as myself.
But as I threw away the unnecessary junk that I’ve plied up over my three years in Japan, I was trying to be really strict with myself and face the real me. Of course, I wouldn’t be throwing out all of my memories. The process of “DanShaRi” in my life made a whole lot less stressful experience.
