One evening last summer, when I asked my 14-year-old son, Jack, to help with dinner, his question shocked me. “What is a colander(漏勺)?” he asked.
Nobody else could cook for the family except me! But that night, as I explained that a colander is the thing with holes in it, I knew what else I should teach Jack. As a mother, while I cared about my son's grades and characters, I always forgot that I should also raise someone's future roommate, boyfriend, husband, or father. I just raised a boy who would always ask his mother, “What's for dinner? ” So I came up with a plan: I would open a housework course for Jack. I was glad to find that he didn't say no.
For two hours, three days a week, Jack was all mine. One day, as his tomato sauce reduced on the stove, he washed and seasoned a chicken for roasting. Then he rolled out the piecrust(馅饼皮)and filled it with apples, all while listening to my explanation on the importance of preheating an oven. I knew that he would like to play basketball, but he had to mend socks with his mother—he tried to stop the sewing lessons, but I refused him.
“I appreciate what you do as a mum, ” he told me one day.
Now, not only can he make his own dinner, but also he can make a big meal for his family. That's what I call a man. I'm glad that I prepared a great gift for my future daughter-in-law(儿媳).
