It's more and more necessary to make seas clear. Now fishermen are joining a plan which uses fishing boats to help clear rubbish from the seas. The Fishing for Litter encourages fishermen to take back rubbish they catch while fishing.
Boats are provided with bags so that any waste they collect can be easily stored and left for the collection on the land. The first boats to join the plan are the Leven Mor and the Kelly Emm. Mr. Scoullar, a government officer, said he hoped the Leven Mor and the Kelly Emm would be the first of many boats to take part in the plan. He said, “This plan has been very successful so far in other parts of Europe.”
Recent studies have found that about twenty thousand tons of rubbish, mainly plastics, is thrown into the North Sea alone every year. Of that, 70% lies on the sea bed, 10% floats on the surface and other part of rubbish is washed up on beaches.
Mr. Scoullar added, “The studies show that ocean life has been greatly affected by the increase in waste. Thousands of birds and fish are suffering every year in Europe's waters as a result of this problem. The rubbish can also cost the fishing industry thousands of pounds per boat every year.”
