Frank was going through a very hard time. His wife had just passed away. She died of cancer (癌症). He felt that his life without her was hopeless and meaningless. For weeks, Frank stayed in their house, doing nothing but cry.
Emily, an old woman living next door to Frank, saw him from her yard one day. She had not seen him for days! She asked him to come closer to the fence (篱笆) next to her house.
"Hello, Frank! Look at the fence. It is falling apart. Can you help me fix the fence?" Emily asked.
Frank was a bit angry. He was the one who needed help at the moment! He thought the old lady was kind of impolite since she must have known what happened but had said nothing. However, he then thought that she was too old to fix the fence herself. "I might as well give her a hand." He said to himself.
Frank worked on the fence for days. When he finished, she thanked him. In return, he smiled for the first time in the weeks passed.
"What a fantastic job! By the way, could you please paint it for me?" Emily said, to his surprise.
Frank could not believe she was asking for more help, but he agreed again since he respected her. He worked hard painting the fence in the hot sun. All of their neighbors told Henry how beautiful the fence looked when passing by. Hearing that, Frank felt much happier than before.
Frank no longer felt that life was meaningless. He finally understood everything Emily did. She knew that staying busy could help us forget our sadness. And more importantly, it was mostly when we helped others that we realize the significance (意义) of life. He did help her, but she truly saved him.
