The Grand Canal (大运河) is a man - made waterway in eastern China. It runs from north to south. Dating from 2,500 years ago and running about 3,200 kilometres through the east of China, it is one of the world's oldest and longest canals. The China Grand Canal Museum is located on the bank of the ancient Grand Canal in Yangzhou, one of the thirteen prefecture - level cities (地级市) in Jiangsu Province.
The museum opened its doors to the public on 16 June, 2021. They tell the history of the Sui - Tang Grand Canal, the Beijing - Hangzhou Grand Canal and the East Zhejiang Canal. These canals give people a treasure of historic and cultural places of interest. People still use them for transport (交通), irrigation (灌溉) and flood control.
Walking through the exhibition hall and into the antiquated (老式的) streets, visitors can see restaurants and shops along the streets. They can also have a taste of life in the water villages along the canal during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
