Ⅰ. 阅读理解
A
Beethoven is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicians. He completed 722 musical works. Unfortunately, the master died while still working on his Tenth Symphony(交响曲). Now,a team of musicians and scientists have used artificial intelligence(AI)to complete the artist’s final composition.
Dr. Matthias first came up with the idea to complete the composition in 2019. He thought it was an appropriate way to celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday in December 2020. He began by enlisting an international team of music experts to help him with the giant task. They included the music composer Walter and Dr. Ahmed, the creator of an innovative AI technology for the art market.
Ahmed and his colleagues started the process by familiarising the AI software initially with a broad range of classical music, and then, narrowed it down to just Beethoven’s work. Meanwhile,Walter and his group tried to interpret the rough drafts and the handful of notes that detailed Beethoven’s plans for the Tenth Symphony.
The team then began the slow and careful task of feeding the AI software musical notes from the unfinished composition. To stay true to Beethoven’s original composition,Ahmed’s team sent Walter hundreds of AI - generated musical note variations every evening. Walter would listen to them and then select the one that he thought was closest to what the artist would have written. The AI team would add the music and rerun the software to generate the next suggestions. And piece by piece, the team was able to complete Beethoven’s Tenth Symphony!
The composition was first released on October 9,2021. Not surprisingly,it caused some controversy(争议). Critics believe technology should not be used to replicate the human creative process. Ahmed and his team agree with their opinions and say their AI software is not out to replace humans—it is just a tool to help artists to express themselves in new ways.

Wearing a headset to play a virtual - reality game is fun. As you move your head around, you can see the scene from different angles. You’re in a fake environment that seems so real. But the power of VR may go well beyond entertainment. It just might help people who suffer from long - time of pain,a new study finds.
“If VR can reduce some types of pain,it could become a new cure with fewer side effects than drugs,” says Sam Hughes,a psychologist at Imperial College London. “And it would be less expensive.”
Hughes’ group studies bone and muscle pain. One example is sciatica. Sciatica is a form of pain doctors call chronic pain, which is different from the hurt you feel when you hit your knee against a table or put your hand in very hot water. It is fairly long - lived pain and may even spread from an initial site to other body parts.
The researchers tested the pain - altering effect of virtual reality. Each volunteer accepted some form of temporary pain. The pain came from a special cream applied to the skin. The cream contained capsaicin. It’s the chemical in hot peppers that burns your mouth.
They then showed the volunteers a movie. Each volunteer would see the movie twice—once in 3D,while wearing a VR headset, and once on a normal 2D screen. The researchers randomly decided for each volunteer whether they watched the 2D or 3D version first. Using the 2D movie as the comparison allowed them to isolate the effect of VR. Watching the movie in VR reduced the pain in the skin area better than viewing the movie in 2D. VR helped them tolerate more pain in the area of the creamed skin. However, that pain reduction ended a few minutes after removing the VR headsets. The researchers wondered how well VR might reduce other types of pain.
5. What’s one of the advantages of VR to reduce pain?
A. It’s much safer. B. It’s more convenient.
C. It’s much faster. D. It’s more efficient.
6. What does the underlined word “chronic” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Sudden. B. Long - term. C. Light. D. Sharp.
7. Why was the special cream used in the experiment?
A. To find chemicals in hot peppers.
B. To bring comfort to volunteers.
C. To burn the volunteers’ mouths.
D. To cause some temporary pain.
8. How was the test carried out?
A. By giving numbers. B. By using examples.
C. By making a comparison. D. By presenting research findings.
