It was half past five in the afternoon when Sarah came home from work. She walked into the living room and looked at her three children.
The children were fourteen, thirteen and nine years old. They were happily watching TV. The room was dirty and untidy. There were empty(空的) glasses and dirty clothes on the floor. Toys were everywhere.
Sarah got angry. "What a mess(凌乱)!" she said to her children. "I work all day and have to do housework all the evening. I'm very tired. I need to have a good rest. I won't do housework anymore!"
Sarah did as she said. She didn't do any housework. Every evening she sat on the sofa and watched TV. A week later, every dish in the kitchen was dirty. All the children's clothes were dirty, too. Every trash can(垃圾桶) was full. The whole house was out of order.
Then one day when Sarah got home, she got very surprised. The kitchen was clean. The children cleaned it!
The second day, when Sarah got home, she found the living room was clean, and the children were washing their clothes. Sarah was happy and went to help them.
Now Sarah and her three children do housework together. Then they all sit on the sofa and watch TV.

We all have a picture of what our hometown is like in our minds. And we know our way around it just like the back of our hands. We also know things change: You go off to school and when you come back, everything seems different.
I grew up in South Carolina. I always thought it was a small town until I left for Newberry College. Newberry is a small town, and there isn't much to do. I never realized how much there was to do in my hometown. I could walk to our outside mall(商场) and go to the movies, go shopping...
My town was a quiet town in my mind where everyone knew each other. But when I came back the summer, I realized how wrong I was. I couldn't believe my eyes. For example, my high school was cool because everything was outside. Sure it was terrible when it rained. But it was so much fun when the playground became a 'lake'. Now it's indoors. I understand why they decided to do this—to keep the students safe.
Maybe that's what growing up is like. You don't want great changes to happen. But you have to learn to live with all the changes. In a way, I have changed(已经改变), too. I'm not the little girl I was. Maybe my hometown is changing for the better, just like me. I'll always remember what my hometown is and what it was before I left for college.
