The story of Nian
Nian is a strong monster. It lives in the sea. It sleeps for 364 days a year.

On the eve of the Spring Festival, it comes out of the sea. It eats animals. Sometimes it hurts people. People are afraid of Nian. So every year on that day, they run to the mountains.
One year, an old man comes to an old woman’s house. He is hungry. The old woman gives him some dumplings to eat. The old woman says, “I’m afraid you have to go. Nian is coming, and it will eat all of us.” “Don’t be afraid. I can help you.”
Then the old man puts red paper on the door. In the evening, Nian comes. The old man goes out in red clothes. And he lights some firecrackers and scares Nian.
Nian is afraid of the colour red and firecrackers. It runs away very fast. From then on, people always put red paper on the door, wear red clothes and light firecrackers at the Spring Festival.
