The blue whale is the largest mammal (哺乳动物) in the world. It can be as heavy as about 180 tons and as long as more than 30 metres. Blue whales can breathe air, but they are used to staying in the water. Water helps to support their huge bodies. They can't stay for too long on land. They often swim in small groups or alone in all the oceans.
These giant whales feed on tiny shrimplike animals called krill. A single adult blue whale may eat as much as eight tons of krill per day. They are so huge that they need massive energy.
They were hunted for many years for their blubber, meat and oil, and they almost died out. Since 1948, International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling coming into force, people have taken actions to protect them. The number of them seems to be recovering.
