C(2025.南京期末)
China's Yangtze River is the world's third longest river. It is home
to hundreds of species of fish. However, the Chinese paddle fish(白鲜),
once common in the area,is no longer a member of this ecosystem(生态
系统). Scientists from China say that the species completely
disappeared between 2005 and 2010.
The Chinese paddle fish was one of the world's largest freshwater r
fish species. It could grow as long as seven metres. The fish had a big
nose that earned it the nickname “ elephant fish ". The Chinese
paddle fish was an ancient species..It first appeared in the Cretaceous
period. After living for about 150 million years, the species finally went
extinct because of human activities.
Overfishing in the 1970 s greatly reduced the species' population.
An average of 25 tons of the Chinese paddle fish were caught each year
during that period. And in 1981,the building of the Gezhouba Dam
divided the Chinese paddle fish into two groups. The two groups could
not mate(交配)with each other and reproduce.As a result,the species'
population became even smaller..
Scientists warn that many freshwater fish species in the Yangtze
River are in danger. The Chinese paddle fish is only the first to
disappear.Fortunately,China has taken action.In January,2021,the
country started a ten−year fishing ban on the Yangtze River..
