It was a very hard year for our family. My Mum had to find a 1 because there was something wrong with my father's legs. 2, she found one and worked in a coffee shop. It didn't pay very well, but it was just enough 3 us.
My Mum worked on Christmas Eve because 4 else wanted to work that day. She just opened the store when an old man came in and 5 a large cup of black coffee. He asked, "Do you have change for a 100 bill?" My Mum said, "I'm 6. This shop opened just now, and there were few 7, so I don't have enough change 8. But since it's Christmas Eve and it's 9 outside, I can give you a cup of coffee for free." The man 10 in the store. As she brought the 11 to him, she said, "Merry Christmas, sir! "The man took the coffee, 12 his 100 bill as a tip(小费) and said "Merry Christmas to you too!" as he walked out of the door.
My mother worked by herself that day, 13 she could keep the tip. His kindness might not make up for(弥补) such a long and 14 year. But it really made my Mum 15 that day. I think kind acts like this are the real Christmas spirit.

五、阅读理解
When a person named Violet went into the store where I worked, I welcomed her with a big smile at once. However, she lost her smile as usual.
Violet told me her husband(丈夫) always played and shared many interesting stories with their eleven-year-old grandson and that there was a very close relationship(关系) between them. But he had died two months before. So she was looking for something to make her grandson happy again.
We looked through the shelves in the store for the right gift to cheer up(使高兴起来) her grandson. "What about this?" I asked, showing her a picture of a boy walking through a darkened forest. Violet and I stood side by side and she looked at this painting for a long time.
"That would be great," Violet said, "but I only have twenty dollars. That is not enough." We were silent(沉默的) for a while.
Then, a man, about thirty years old, went into the store. He slowly stood behind us. "Nice painting," he said to Violet. "Are you going to buy it?" "Well," Violet answered and then she told him why she wanted to buy the painting and the difficulty she had. After listening to her story, the man said, "I'll pay for it." Violet said, "I couldn't let you do that." The man said, "This painting is great for your grandson. As its painter, I am happy to give it to someone who really enjoys it."
