Every night at a village inn in Laomudeng Village (老姆登村) in China's Yunnan Province, actors sing and dance around a campfire with a group of people. There, the 47-year-old Yu Wulin runs an inn with his wife.
At the end of the 1990s, people from other places in China began visiting the village. They would travel around during the day and stay in the village at night. Those visitors stayed at Yu's home because he was the only standard Chinese speaker in the village at that time. His wife often cooked delicious food, sang songs and danced for them for free. In 2001, Yu opened the village's first inn—a house with eight beds near his home. Soon, it welcomed more visitors.
