There are many kinds of dictionaries—Chinese dictionaries, English dictionaries, English-Chinese dictionaries and so on. When we learn English, we often use English dictionaries or English-Chinese dictionaries.
We use the English or English-Chinese dictionary for two reasons—to find out how to spell the word, and to find out the meaning of a word.
All the words in such a dictionary are in alphabetical(按字母顺序的) order. Words that begin with the letter “a” are at the beginning of the dictionary. Words that begin with the letter “z” are at the end of the dictionary.
The second letter of a word is also important. For example, the word “act” comes before the word “ant”. This is because the letter “c” comes before the letter “n” in the alphabet. For the same reason the word “bag” comes before the word “bat”. The letter “g” comes before the letter “t” in the alphabet.
If people do not know the alphabets, they cannot use an English or English-Chinese dictionary. They do not know how to find words.
