The great scientist Deng Jiaxian(1924－1986) is often called the Father of Chinese Atomic(原子) Science. During his life he helped China become a stronger and safer country.
Deng was born in Anhui Province on June 25，1924. As a child，he loved to study and wanted to be a teacher like his father，a famous professor. But his father wanted Deng to study science to help China become a modern country. Because he loved his father and his country，Deng studied hard and went to university.
After finishing his university study in 1945，he taught physics at several middle schools and later at Beijing University. In 1948，Deng went to the USA to study for a doctor’s degree(博士学位) in physics. This study usually took four or more years. But the clever young man worked hard and did it in only two years. He was the youngest person in his class，so they called him the “Baby Doctor”.
