Ⅳ Read the passage and choose the best answers.
The “China Sky Eye” (FAST) is the world’s largest radio telescope, located in Guizhou, China. Its 500-metre dish (碟状物) can detect(探测) faint radio waves from billions of light years away, helping scientists study pulsars (脉冲星) and search for life in space.
FAST was the dream of Nan Rendong, a Chinese astronomer known as the “Father of FAST”. In 1994, Nan decided China needed its own giant telescope. He led a team to search for the perfect site in Guizhou’s mountains. After studying maps and hiking through forests for over 10 years, his team chose Dawodang Valley. Surrounded by hills, this area naturally avoids noise from human-made signals like TVs and radios.
Building FAST was extremely difficult. The telescope’s design required ultra-precise (超精准的) technology. For example, its 4,450 metal panels must fit perfectly to focus on space signals. Nan and engineers invented new technologies, such as super-strong steel cables that can hold the heavy dish. Sadly, Nan passed away in 2017, just one year after FAST was completed. His lifelong effort made China a global leader in astronomy.
Today, FAST has discovered over 1,000 pulsars and shared data with scientists worldwide. It stands as a symbol of China’s scientific spirit and Nan Rendong’s great dedication.
