Your Body and DNA
Are you tall? Are your eyes black or brown? What size are your feet?
When you were a baby, your body already knew the answers to these questions.
How? With DNA.
DNA is like a blueprint. What's a blueprint? You use a blueprint to build a house. A blueprint is a drawing. It shows where to put all the parts of the house. It's the pattern you use to build the house.
DNA is a pattern, too. Your body uses this pattern to build itself. DNA is the "blueprint" of life.
DNA is fascinating!
Except for identical twins, each living thing has its own, unique DNA. DNA is in every part of your body. Your finger has the same DNA as your hair. Your bones have the same DNA as your skin. You have your own DNA, but it repeats patterns from your parents' DNA. Who are your parents? Your mother and father.
Your DNA comes from your parents.
From your DNA, scientists can identify (辨别) you and people related to you. Who is related to you? Your mother and father are related to you. So are their sisters, brothers, and parents. But is your mother's sister's husband related to you? No!
Some healthy problems come from your family DNA. Scientists can look for these problems in your DNA. Sometimes they can help you before you become sick.
