Teachers are adopting new AI grading tools, saying the programs let them give students faster feedback and more chances to practice. Teachers believe AI helpers, used properly, can provide consistency and remove bias(偏见) in grading student work. Others say the technology isn't reliable enough yet to be used for something as critical as grading, which can affect college admissions and other life choices.
To see how the "graders" work, researchers put a 12th-grade English paper, which earned 97% in 2013, into three tools: AutoMark, Class Companion and CoGrader. The first gave the paper 97%, and later 100%, while the two others were stricter, rating it 62% and 85% respectively, suggesting refining (使精练) the focus of paragraphs, shortening long sentences and citing famous quotations. The essay's original grader, high-school English teacher Stephen Mounkhall, noted some of the feedback sounded potentially believable as a teacher, but that the robot was incapable of viewing the small differences of a student's progression.
The startups state the tools have gained recognition over the last school year and are continually being improved. Class Companion co-founder Avery Pan said teachers could hide the score numbers altogether. CoGrader offers a button to make feedback kinder.
Sixth-grade English teacher Stephanie Galvani likes the AI tools as they help keep her from bringing bias into her grading. Given AI can offer too much criticism, she removed suggestions about less important skills so as not to overwhelm the students. "They're sixth graders, and I don't want to make them cry," she said. High-school English teacher Andrew Gitner adjusted AI-generated comments in order to make them sound more like something he would write. "I would never use the word 'delve'," he said, "but AI constantly did."
AI startup founders stress that even as the tools become more trustworthy, teachers should always play an active role in final grades.
