Feeney gave $3.7 billion to education and more than $870 million to human rights and social change campaigns. He likewise gave around $62 million to end the death penalty (死刑) in the United States and $76 million to support the Affordable Care Act. Feeney also returned to his alma mater (母校), Cornell University, and gifted them $350 million to build a technology campus in New York City.
"We learned a lot. We would do some things differently, but I am very satisfied. I feel very good about completing this on my watch," Feeney told Forbes. "My thanks to all who joined us on this journey," he added, "and to those wondering about Giving While Living philosophy."
"He was my hero and Bill Gates' hero," Warren Buffett once remarked. "He should be everybody's hero." Indeed, Feeney was an inspiration for the "Giving Pledge", which Buffett and the Gateses launched in 2010, whose 241 mega - rich signatories (签署者) have promised to dedicate a majority of their fortunes toward charitable pursuits.
