B
Many people dream of going on a great travel adventure (冒险). Most of us keep dreaming, while others make it happen.
Gregg Beakney’s dream was to travel around America. He got the idea after he finished a 1,600-kilometre bike ride. Gregg’s friend, Brooks Allen, was also a cyclist (骑行者). The two friends talked and decided on their goal; they would travel from Alaska to Argentina by bike.
To pay for the journey, Gregg and Brooks worked and saved money for years. When they were on the road, they often camped outdoors or stayed in cheap hotels. In many places along the way, local people opened their homes to the two friends and gave them food.
During their journey, Gregg and Brooks cycled through deserts, rainforests and mountains. They visited modern cities and explored ancient places, such as Tikal in Guatemala. Two years later, Gregg finally reached Ushuaia, Argentina. However, Brooks didn’t finish the journey because of his health problem.
Gregg and Brooks recorded their experiences in an online blog. The journey taught both men a lot about travelling. Here is some of Gregg’s advice.
Travel light. You don’t need to take so many things with you. The fewer things you have, the less you’ll worry about. Some important things are OK.
Be flexible. It’s not necessary to plan all the details. Sometimes you need to change your plans. Then you’ll be relaxed and happy, even when there are difficulties along the way.
Be polite. Always remember that nobody wants to cheat or fight with a nice person. When you are friendly enough to others, they will do the same.
